Aayirathil Oruvan Movie Story
Shola’s king after a war in their home land runs and hides some where unknown place with bunch of people. They do not want any one to follow and destroy their kingdom.
Pratab (archaeologist) tries to find the place where he could have gone using some ancient graphs and literature. One day government gets the news that Pratab is missing or dead. So government sends Reema Sen and private security professionals to find Pratab. Reema Sen seeks the help of Andrea who is daughter of Pratab. Then she joins the team. They also hire about 30 workers to help them on the way and Karthick leads that crew.
They take a ship and go to a place and ask for the help of guides and everyone refuses to come. Then Karthick leads the team, all of a sudden there are some creatures in the sea that attacks them.
They reach the island after some loss of men. Then a bunch of tribes attack them, again with the help of armed security guards our crew takes victory. Then our crew faces the snakes and craps….
Then, finally our crew finds the Shola’s living till date and Partheeban is the king and he is expecting a messenger who will guide them back to their home land.
Now, Reema sen has a flash back and she says that she wants to take revenge on Partheeban because Shola’s have stolen their God’s statue and she brings the military and kills every one by raping and brutally killing.
Over all this is just the worst movie that can be given by directors like Selvaraghavan

- Island with big desert is unbelievable

2 good points i will say… karthi was nice and secomdly aayirathil oruvan song was good..the way they danced. then 1 doubt suppan…did u like the climax of this movie. becoz u didnt say anything abt that. am i the only one who didnt ike the climax?i felt mokka…

This film was terrible.
I knew it the second I found out who ever was to direct the film.
People boasted that it was a very high budget movie and had great graphical input.
This is a huge shame when compared to films such as Avatar which came out recently.
I know that Tamil film budgets are relatively smaller but it was possible in Pazhasi Raja, Arundathi and also yet come Endhiran. Not only that, Khola Baskar who edited this movie isn't a professional, whilst he's normal cuts are good, developing the CGI in this film was terrible.
At least they could have let Anthony edit this big budget film since Anthony probably is the best editor out who could do somewhat good enough graphics. I heard Anthony and some other studio is to collaborate to create the CGI for Endhiran and it would look just as good as Hollywood flicks apparently.
The caves were poorly designed. Once again, this film like a big chance missed. If it was meant to be a huge budget movie, at least get a better technical team.

The CGI was all by editor Khola Baskar.
Many of the CGI was ripped off from other old films.
The graphics for the snake was the only genuine one.
The caves were also just images of sets and then during the filming process, they got the actors to stand in front of a large green sheet and act everything. Then during the editing phase, they used the green screen effect to remove the green background and added the cave image, thats why it looks bad.
This green screening effect was used in 3 of the songs in Adhavan but it was edited well so it looked realistic.
I know all this since I am also an editor and have worked alongside another junior team of editors to help film editors such as Anthony etc.
So far I have only worked with the editors of the yet-to-come film Goa, I personally haven't worked with them but small portions of the film has to be covered by us.

I wish i have seen this review before watching the movie. It is one of the worst movie i have seen. I totally agree that the first half kept me seated but the second half was the worst that i expected from Selvaraghavan. The cast did their part. From the directors interview it was believed that they did lot of research for this movie. I would suggest him first to research on putting a good screen play rather than wasting time , efforts and money on these kind of movies atleast in the future.

I did some more researching and my peer (who is also an editor) found out that the snake CGI was in fact added by the DI team (who do the extra editing if the director feels that the final cut by the proper editor needs a bit more extras).

Mr.Suppan, not only girls, karthi also undressed to enter before the cave, is because to find a tattoo ( tiger) in a person, who will be the ambassador for the King, and the parson is Karthi ( because he has tiger tattoo on his back).
Moreover, your comment on this movie is not fair, this is not at all a great movie, but it's not worse as you depicted.
I think Girls only show front side and Karthick shows back side.

Aayarathil Oruvan isn't that violent but i feel that when "Sexual" content is implied, it gets an A.
With Kanthsamy, to me, I didnt find it sexually based, but to Indians it feels too much.

I generally don't go by reviews but a friend of mine forwarded your review, I heard you listed big list of faults. I can even list lots of faults in your review. I've not heard your reviews before but I assume you are good at it. I got a feeling that you had a pre-assumption that this is a flop movie and you were not neutral while reviewing it. I am not saying this is the best movie or everyone should watch it. But this is not as bad ad you've reviewed it. I watched the day its released, friend of mine and I got so much impressed that we wanted to go one more time, another friend in India watched twice with his family. DON'T TELL ME we don't have brains, just because you dint like. I hardly find you listed any good things in the movie. I agree there are loose ends here and there but in total its a GOOD movie. THIS IS NOT A MOVIE FOR THOSE WHO CAN'T ACCEPT FANTASY IN TAMIL CINEMAS.

Vettaikaran was a good entertainer. In fact it's a brilliant movie compared to AO.
Vettaikaran had the same old story but its execution was well done.
Great songs, good camerawork, nice editing and some racy screenplay. What more, it proves that Vijay can take serious roles. AO is something new people say, but maybe the way it was presented might be new but it boils down to a predictable story. Trust me, the las thing a married couple or even a family would want to see is a fantasy film. Maybe for younger views the film might seem "OK" but fantasy in Tamil cinema just doesn't sync well. That's why Hollywood movies are dubbed into Tamil. AO might be something different but I personally think it is crap. Even if the film was good, there is the technical side of the film that has to be reviewed too. The film heavily depends on CG, what happened huh? The CG is crappy? And don't tell me the budget was low, the budget was good enough to do good CGI artwork or the director should've shown the work to another producer who can afford all the expenses.
Once again, AO coulda been something.
I guess you didn't understand the story. The film rakes along some of the best films ever made in Tamil cinema.

I really did not understand why Karthick, without rescuing Parthiban, runs with that small boy at the end. They could have taken the original Chola's and Pandiya's history which we have read in our history books and may be that could have been a success.

Nan kadavul though got National award can't be accepted as a good movie because such movies are considered to be off-beat movies and are not for regular audience. But i am not against such movies but the problem for that movie was that pre-release hype was too much. If directors like Adur gopalakrishnan, MT.Vasudevan Nair and Satyajith ray given such script, they would have done this movie in 4 months time in a shoe-lace budget. That was the probs with Nan Kadavul.. Anbe Sivam was a good movie but again had an off-beat content but to be frank i liked it very much. But Namitha i can't understand how you dare to tabulate AO movie with movies said above… Actually what is the basic storyline of this Aayorathil Oruvan?Ok i do agree this is a fantasy movie. But Fantasy movies should be focussed on family audience. Can you dare to take your family to this movie?Why the hell actors like Karthi and Parthiban had been a part of this rotten movie? At the end of the movie, You can't really understand what the hell is happening on screen..

1. "Historical mythology" is a novelty in Tamil Cinema no doubt, but just chosing it doesnt give Selva credits.
2. Looks like someone didnt tailor the whole thing together as well as it had to be.
3. Perfect example of disorganized presentation of a wild "could have been interesting" imagination.
4. There could have been a literarian or some translator who could have explained things, especially that "different" senthamizh they spoke.

5. Selva should have spent time to have someone independently review the movie, that way so many things that have not been explained could have been caught. He could even have sought Dhanush's help – if Dhanush didnt understand, the audience would not. Selva would, because he was the one who conceived, experienced and lived the story. That really doesnt matter. What matters is audience needs to understand to appreciate a movie.
6. Dont quite get who the Aayirathil Oruvan really is – Parthiban? Karthik? Or the one in 1000 audience who probabaly would have liked the movie.
7. In his next attempt, if Selva presents his 99% perspiration on an understandable canvas, he will be the inspiration for atleast 1% of the Directors vernturing to try out different genres.
I can keep going, but am quitting as a mark of respect to all their hard work.

1. "Nallaa irukunaa enna nalla irukunu sollalaam… mokkainaa evlo mokkainu ennatha solradhu?" – FUNNY.
2. You encourage everyone to go to theaters and watch.
3. "Yadhaartham" seems to be your USP, dont lose it.
Some things you might want to consider changing (just my opinion):
1. Try not to give the story out – viewers might lose the fun.
2. Try reviewing movies from other languages – may be French, Chinese, etc – that way you can talk better about where our guys flick from.
3. You might want to talk more about actors and their skills, etc – like how Surya has evolved from Nerukku Ner when you are reviewing, for example Aadhavan.
4. On comedians, please provide an honest, unbiased opinion – not all of vadivelu's or vivek's comedies are good.
Note: Items 3 and 4 – not that you are not doing it, just that I feel you would be good at that too and make your reviews better.

I totally agree with that. I am not sure if I will continue to do that. Neenga solra madhiri unmaya sonnaa kooda people might not like it (because they have put in so much effort making that filem, but that alone doesnt make it a great movie – this includes the likes of Mani Ratnam and K B).

Part of the team I work in were involved in the production of Asal starring Ajith.
The editing was done by Anthony who is a great editor, over that, the DI team I work in has included THE BEST computer generated animations ever in tamil cinema.
I know this sounds unbelievable but you will understand when you watch. Director Saran is a director who shoots films at high budgets and this film has a very high budget. It's been in the making for long now and I guanratee you that the CGI in this film would be of a somewhat near Hollywood level.
And for films already out, how about Pazhasi Raja and Arundathi, they are not Tamil but still made on more or less the same budgets Tamil films are made at and they had great CGI. So nope, AO was a failure in almost every aspect.

Well if u can compare a tamil movie with hollymovies then we can compare Indian Guys to foriegn guys saying that foriegn guys are better in many ways compared to you and give a better standard of living if Indian girls are married to them… ha ha ha so funny… just compare the facilities and the budget which we have in this field compared to the hollywod industry and feel proud that such a movie was made in Tamil…
I felt the only mistake was that the king and the queens are using scents and sandal and turmeric when they live in such a desert that too in the caves…
If I cannot take a movie copying the hollywood style. I would better not take it.
"Bangkok dangerous" is a pure copy of our Tamil movie Pattiyal. But the time has been reduced to 90mins and the scenes are modified in such a way so Hollywood fans love that. My point here is take the film which are possible, don't even try and dissatisfy the audience. End of the day, It is our money….
how many hollywood movies have u watched. it looks like u r encouraging a child got zero marks in exams without learning anything. everyone here r commenting to take good things from Hollywood not make crap out good things. just accept it. yes the movie was a total waste, selva shuld have done well. three years for such filthy movie is just a publicity stunt. we are forced to make small budget movies with less facilities because our market very small compared to hollywood. WHY? because we did make movies which international audience love. instead most of our directors,actors and producers make movies only for b, c, d centres. we boast of releasing movies in 800-1000 theatres but hollywood releases movies in more than 5000 screens in the us alone. because people all over the world love their movies. I would like to remind the way how Adithya Karikalan killed the pandiya king and place his head in front of the palace…. Also how Raja raja cholan treated Ravidhaasan and his group of people when he came to know that they are responsible for his brother's death… If we can accept such things in books then why not in movies. Every man has a Ghori face within him be it a great king or a king who rules the skeletons… Who we can accept such brutalism in movies like 300, Troy, Avatar and 10000 BC why not with the Cholas who are living away from a world in a lonely island with less or no facilities inside a cave…Please don't give spoiler comments… This movie was just a starter and I'm waiting for more main course items in future in Tamil movies. If you say they lived in a cave, how come there is town or city out side the cave. There is plenty of water coming inside the cave, there is fire to cook, but they eat raw meet. If they eat so much of raw meet where did they get it. And it has been covered with Green leaves. "GREEN"

If I can, I would like to make a point to Vijayalakshmi. Dont even underestimate the funds that Kollywood has to pump into movie making. Cinema is infact one of the highest capital involving industry. Its just that we spend it more for songs and running around trees and flying the entire crew (including unnecessary comedians) to all over the globe; and they spend it on useful stuff (including CGI) that please the eye and make it an overall better product. I am not saying we are as rich as Hollywood producers (Note: Ashok Amritraj is one of our own) but its probably not so bad as you project. We could have diverted all funds of Veerasamy and a bunch of Captain movies to make those appa-paiyan-thatha sharathkumar / vijayakumar movies and made CGI's of AO better. That kind of capital collaboration to make few movies – few great movies is a point worth pondering. Again, just my opinion – correct me if I am wrong.
I agree, Suppan Sir – no point discussing this movie any further. Actually, any genuine movie buff would have waited for a chance to see the movie and appreciate every frame – but a "genuine" movie buff cant really appreciate this movie.

I 100% agree with you review but stuff like the raw meat incident, its part of the film, you cant really say theres no logic because of one scene. Thats like saying you had a tasty chocolate bar but you didnt like it cause the wrapper was in a color you dislike. So you should go into a bit more detail next time but I agree with you. The film coulda been something way better. I think the title is referring to Selvaragan cause he was a 1 of a 1000 directors who actually was willing to take a shit movie.

One of the most common problem with the tamilians is they accept Holywood movies even if the story or screenplay is not good. But when it comes to Tamil movies, they find logic in it. This movie is purely fictional and Hats of to Selvaraghavan who dared to craft such a nice project. Excellent CG for a Kollywood budget movie I would say, what better can you expect? If you can't understand the movie don't say you didn't like it, but say you didn't understand. I loved and enjoyed the movie to the core after I understood the story line. Overall must watch movie and people should encourage such movies so that the next coming movies will better this.
No No.. You are underestimating the power of Kollywood. This movie's budget is less than Sivaji or Enthiran.
The reason is the Director should have the ability to convince the producer to invest more funds and do better CG or ART work.

Have you seen Adhavan? The song Yeno Yeno might've looked like it was shot in different locations but it was only partly, the bit where Nayathara and Surya dance in that icy area as well as by the mountains were all just backgrounds added in the editing process. And anyway, the hype was all crap.
If it was such a big project, they should've got someone like ARR to compose the music, KV Anand or some other leading cinematographer and a more experienced editor such as Anthony or V.T. Vijayanm or even Don Max who is now near the top of the league (Remember the CGI in the start of the film in Adhavan, when Surya rides that motorbike and the car explosion during the start credits? That was all CGI and of a high quality).
Blaming it on a budget is a lame excuse. Kollywood is well developed enough to produce quality work such as Avatar and so on. I didn't find anything great about AO. The first half was done well but then later I just felt like this was a high-budget but cheaply executed way to show off Reema's body.
